Advocacy Opportunity Today: Fond Du Lac Avenue Reconstruction
A portion of one of Milwaukee's most notorious high-injury roads, Fond Du Lac Avenue, is up for reconstruction in the coming years, and today is the first opportunity to advocate for traffic calming improvements to city and state officials.
Public Involvement Meeting #1
Wednesday, July 30th
MCTS Administration Building
1942 N. 17th Street
4 pm to 6 pm
Transit: BLUE, 57, 24, 12
As stated on the city website, the proposed changes to Fond Du Lac Avenue (between 12th and 20th Streets) include patching and replacing concrete, updating curb ramps to be ADA-compliant, and updating traffic signals. While these updates are needed, we must to encourage officials to think bigger and include more transformative changes to calm traffic and benefit transit riders, pedestrians, cyclists, scooterers, drivers – all users of the corridor. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to set the stage for future improvements elsewhere along the corridor.
Milwaukee recently formally adopted Vision Zero. Just yesterday, Milwaukee DPW publicized data showing an 85% reduction in speeding on Van Buren Street after that road was transformed with a two-way bikeway, in-lane boarding for transit, and improved crosswalks. We know these interventions work, and Milwaukeeans deserve more than a rip-and-replace with some improvements around the margins. Let's show out and demand better.
If you cannot attend today's meeting, we encourage you to subscribe to the project on Engage MKE, as there will certainly be future meetings and opportunities to submit input online.
